11:46 am	New device jangles birds away A scaring device which jerks wire tassles and makes a harsh metallic sound is keeping birds away from valuable crops. Inventor Jay Scanlon developed the Jangler after his frustration with inadequate bird-scaring techniques. The United States-born New Zealand citizen found a long wire cable jerking metallic strips and rattling tin cans was most effective at disturbing birds and preventing them from eating seed crops. "If you put some visually and auditory disruptive items on a long wire and jerk the wire in a particular way, you can set up a sinusoidal wave in the wire that progressively and randomly jangles those items around. It's chaotic and birds do not like it. They fly Chicago Blackhawks away." Scanlon, owner of vegetable seed producer A B Annand & Co, built his own Jangler to scare off birds at the business's Osterley Farm, a 28-hectare trial unit near Templeton, and has patented the idea. Bird damage to seed worth up to hundreds of dollars a kilogram is an expensive problem for arable farmers. Over the years, Scanlon tried various devices, among them netting and attracting predator birds, with moderate success. He said small birds such as finches and waxeyes were a pest peculiar to Canterbury, because of the plain's many trees and shelter belts. Removing netting from a high- value vegetable crop before harvesting damaged brittle seedheads and birds still managed to get in under the netting, so he began to look for an alternative about four years ago. To achieve a gentle jerk over the length of a 350-metre wire, he devised a solar-powered machine with a disk which rotates one end of the wire. Within the cans is a secret jangly device sealed inside. Broadfields farmer John Morrish was less than convinced when Scanlon first told him about the bird- scaring invention. "A few years ago, I used to grow canola, and vowed that I would never grow it again because of the bird devastation," said Morrish. watches-0-9 "We have lifestyle blocks beside us and every one is covered in big trees, so there were plenty of birds." But he decided he had nothing to lose when the inventor came up with a good offer. The Jangler area outyielded the netted area by 20 per cent which, in turn, outperformed the unprotected area by 40 per cent. WINNIPEG JETS He was born in East Andover, the son of Thomas and Florence (Robinson) Hoitt. Moe worked for 36 years as a leather worker for Allied Leather in Penacook. He loved fishing and visiting museums and was an avid history buff. Moe loved camping and travel. He enjoyed animals. Moe enjoyed playing his guitar at parties and family gatherings. A: Even though the end of the season didn't end up as I had anticipated, after falling and encountering a bad concussion from my first practice jump of the state meet, I am very optimistic for the next season. Hopefully over the summer I'll do some jumping to prepare for my senior year on the jumping team. I've learned that we all stumble upon challenges and obstacles in life and the best way to react to them is to stay on our feet and strive to do our best. Q: What was your best memory of the season? A: My best memory of the season was winning the pre-state meet individually while Concord came in first as well. The conditions were great and many jumpers were riding farther than usual. It was the best I had felt all season and it was a spectacular feeling being able to make it happen. All that I had improved on throughout the season meshed together perfectly. Q: What is the scariest part about learning to ski jump? A: Moving up to bigger jumps. Your heart pounds at an unimaginable rate and the anticipation gives you a slight feeling of apprehension as well as motivation. Moving up to a bigger jump is a thrill to say the least. Q: Who was your favorite athlete at the Olympics? A: Ski jumper Peter Frenette. I've jumped in Lake Placid, N.Y., with Peter and his ability is truly inspirational. It was an awesome feeling watching him on TV knowing that I had had the opportunity to jump with him. Q: How did you become interested in ski jumping? A: I became interested in ski jumping while I attended Shaker Road School for 7th and 8th grade. The headmaster, Doug Hicks, brought me up to the jumps while the other jumpers were doing some dry-land training. The second I set eyes on the daunting size of the jumps I fell in love with the sport and still maintain that passion today. I feel extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to jump in middle school before my high school years because I was able to come in with some experience. Q: What is the best nickname you've ever had and how did you get it? A: The most memorable nickname that I've received was in sixth grade. Some of my friends called me bengkenstein because I am always very meticulous about my school work. This is the same board of directors that The Alfond Report and the Portland Research Report said were guilty of irresponsibility and mismanagement and caused Good Will to shut down for the first time in its history. The directors are using one cottage as The Stratton Learning Center, thus justifying state tax money for support. Dr. G.W. Hinckley was opposed to government funding and involvement. Good Will was a private home and school to provide a home and a helping hand to needy children, and outsiders have taken over and made it a state institution. watches m The bylaw changes have a dissolution clause that allows the directors to sell off the real estate and buildings. We alumni have believed for a long time this was their intention. We intend to file suit against any potential buyers of any property or buildings. The Restoration of the Good Will Idea Committee has been fighting the directors' illegal and irresponsible takeover for years. However, the state of Maine, does not allow nonprofit organizations to be heard in its courts. So, honest people can't do anything about it legally. We are asking state representatives to present a bill to the Legislature to allow nonprofits in the courts. The need for a home for children such as we had at Good Will has never been greater. 1:52 pm	Old bones soon may be reburied By Pam Sohn Barring complications, the skeletal remains of a prehistoric American Indian found more than four years ago on TVA property in the Wolftever Creek area soon again may rest at a new burial site nearby, according to officials. "We will probably get (reburial) done within the month of July," Russell Townsend, tribal historical preservation officer with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, said Monday. "Based on the context from which the remains were recovered, the Hamilton County forensic anthropologist determined that they were prehistoric Native American and not modern. No cultural items were associated with the remains ..." the ad states. "We're following a procedure set out in the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act," said Eric Howard, the TVA's interim cultural resources manager. Mr. Townsend said the way the bones "just turned up" makes him believe they may have been looted or perhaps found after they eroded out of a river or creek bank and placed in a conspicuous spot so they might be dealt with appropriately. 1:55 pm	Drawbacks exist to privatizing Gov. Bob McDonnell continues to push for privatization of the Virginia ABC retail liquor operations. I was honored to have been chairman of the Virginia Department of ABC for four years during Gov. Mark Warner's administration. During that time I developed a deep understanding of the challenges surrounding the responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages. A wholesale sexy lingerie key part of the responsibility of ABC is promoting moderation in the consumption of alcoholic beverages and being a steward of Virginian's health and safety as related to the consumption of beverage alcohol. I believe it would be a severe mistake to privatize the wholesale and (or) retail liquor operations in Virginia. The commonwealth is in the best position to balance the responsibilities of sale of liquor, the enforcement of laws and regulations and the promotion of moderation in the consumption of beverage alcohol. The public health and public safety considerations of alcohol consumption are a major concern and are not often discussed. Virginians consume approximately the national average of beer and wine. Conversely, they consume approximately 20 percent less liquor per capita than the national average. That is due to less availability, no advertising, strict enforcement of ABC laws and aggressive promotion of moderation by Virginia ABC. Due in large part to this lower consumption, Virginians suffer less from alcoholism, DUI, sclerosis, fetal alcohol syndrome and underage consumption, among other health and public safety problems. In general, Virginia is in the lowest percentiles in the U.S. for these undesirable occurrences. Most privatization scenarios promote better availability, lower pricing and better selection. All of those factors translate to higher consumption. If Virginians' consumption of liquor were to rise to the national average, one could reasonably expect that the incidence of the undesirable occurrences would also rise to the national average. Studies show that for every 5 percent increase in consumption, there is a $36.25 per capita expense to society for increased health care, treatment, enforcement, property damage, lost productivity, etc. If the consumption of liquor were to increase the 20 percent to the national average, the annual cost to the citizens is estimated to be more than $1 billion. Consumption of alcoholic beverages by individuals under the age of 21 is a serious problem. Restaurants, convenience stores, supermarkets, etc. have a compliance rate of around 85 percent to 90 percent when checked by ABC agents for sales of alcohol to underage persons. Virginia ABC stores have a compliance rate in excess of 98 percent. That translates to lower consumption of liquor by underage persons than would be the case if liquor were to be sold in privately owned stores. Taxes are in addition to that figure. That profit would have to be turned over to the private liquor store owners for them to stay in business. There is no room to increase liquor prices to offset the loss of profit to the commonwealth by privatizing ABC stores. 2:14 pm	'Our lives are dawning' More than 400 seniors graduate from Concord High Growing up, Cote Laramie never thought he would attend a school like Harvard. The 17-year-old, who graduated yesterday from Concord High School, was born to a single mother and at age 4 went to live with his aunt. He and his family love one another, he said, but his childhood sometimes lacked order. "I didn't come from a very stable familial structure, which in a way has led me to school," Laramie said. "I never felt insecure about my grades and how I did in school." There he thrived, racking up some of the highest grades in his class and discovering a talent for the performing arts. Laramie has a special love for language. When his fourth-grade class at Rumford School would write journal entries, he always wrote a poem. That affection grew, and as a high school junior he won the state Poetry Out Loud competition and went on to represent New Hampshire in the national contest. Laramie likes the symbolism and sounds of poetry, and he appreciates the form's economy. "A novel takes me a long time to read," he said. "In this country, novels are a lot more preferred even though they're long, and it's funny because our lives are so busy. Sometimes I think people should read poetry more."
